G2/3 Guided Explanation Writing

We are currently learning about evidence from the past and how it helps us to understand the place we live in. We are also learning how to write explanation texts. After researching Thomas Edison and orally presenting our findings, we wrote this text together.

How Thomas Edison’s inventions have changed our world

Thomas Edison’s inventions have changed our world a lot. They have given us the chance to talk to friends who are somewhere else, music, talking dolls, movies and maybe most importantly, light when it is dark.

Thomas Edison improved Mr Bell’s telephone, so that it could be used to talk with our friends from far away. He also made it louder. Almost everyone has a telephone now.

His phonograph recorded sound clearly and people used it to listen to music. Now, many people use iPods and stereos for this. Thomas Edison even created the talking doll by putting a little phonograph inside the doll.

He invented a machine that recorded moving pictures (kinetoscope), which gave us silent movies. Later, he connected the phonograph with the kinetoscope to get sound and moving pictures together. This was the first ever movie!

Thomas Edison’s most famous invention was the light bulb, because, when it was dark, we could turn on the lights and see clearly. The first light bulb only lasted for two or three minutes, but modern light bulbs can last for years.

Thomas Edison’s inventions make our lives easier and happier.

G2/3 Reading Skills

It's always difficult when you're reading a book and you come across unfamiliar words.

Today, we practiced reading and guessing unfamiliar words through their context. It was hard work, but good fun, and we managed to learn some new words.

Can you remember the meaning of these words?

  • alternative; the road was blocked, so they had to find an alternative way.
  • assisted; the kind boy assisted the old lady to cross the road.
  • gallant; the gallant knight rode on towards the dark cave where the dragon lived.
  • devoured; Greedy Greg devoured his dinner in less than a minute.
  • detested; Ralph detested his sister's pet rat.
  • entire; He was able to fit the entire hotdog in his mouth.
  • concerned; Mary was concerned when her son didn't return from the park on time.
